The Grand Finale: Going Down the Pit
Well, folks. I didn't want to do this, but the time has come to face the music. Or rather, the absolute, resounding silence.
I launched this website under a year ago. I opted to remain anonymous, naively thinking, "Hey, let the site do the talking! The rich, gripping history of our village will surely be enough to captivate the masses!"
Spoiler alert: It wasn't.
Back in mid June, I even issued a blunt warning right at the bottom of the pages: Apathy Has Consequence. It was a clear, simple heads-up that low visitor traffic would force the Moor Row archive to close. I gave it a few seconds on each browser load - plenty of time for anyone who actually cared to notice.
The response to that warning? More of the same resounding indifference.
According to the statistics, referral traffic from the likes of Facebook has been nothing short of a ghost town. It turns out that while I was deep in the archives, the majority of the population was busy looking at literally anything else. It points to a simple, undeniable fact: most people just aren't interested. And honestly, who can blame you? Why read about local heritage when you can watch videos of cats falling off sofas?
Then we come to the online sales. I put up some local imagery for sale, thinking a few people might want a piece of the village on their wall. Total items sold to date: zero. Not a single one. I know times are hard, but seriously? Not even a pity purchase? I genuinely don't know why I bothered.
But nothing quite sums up the roaring success of this venture like our community forum. We have reached a staggering, record-breaking milestone of four members. And yes, that includes me.
Between the endless hours of research, the formatting, and the actual cold, hard cash it costs to keep this digital ship afloat, the numbers just don't add up anymore. It hasn't been worth the sweat or the fees.
And so, it is time to call it a day. I will not be renewing the domain. In the coming weeks, this website will officially disappear from search results, plunging into the dark, forgotten depths of the internet like an unsuspecting walker falling down an old, unmapped West Cumbrian mineshaft. No warning, a dramatic echo, and then never to be seen or heard of again.
- To the grand total of three people who actually visited and supported the site: thank you for your patronage. It was brief, but it was appreciated ❤️
To the rest of you? Well. You only have yourselves to blame when you're looking for local history (whether regards the village, or somewhere else) and find nothing but a digital void.
Over and out.
