A Stroll Down Penzance Street: The Cornish Heart of Moor Row

If you’ve ever found yourself wandering through the quiet village of Moor Row in West Cumbria, you might have spotted a street name that seems a long way from home: Penzance Street.

It’s not a sat-nav error.

This little slice of the village is a direct nod to the area’s rich industrial past. In the 19th century, West Cumbria’s booming iron ore mines drew in workers from all over the British Isles, including a massive influx of Cornish tin miners. They travelled hundreds of miles north for work, bringing their families, their accents, and - evidently - their place names with them.

But beyond its name, Penzance Street is a fascinating connector in the village, tying together the community’s history of faith, education, and industry.

The Crossroads of the Village
Geographically, Penzance Street links two roads: Church Street and School Street.

At one end, where the street meets School Street, you’ll find the bustling Moor Row Community Primary School. For generations, the sound of the school bell and children playing has been the background noise of daily life here.

It’s a lovely reminder that while the mines are long gone, the village community is still very much alive.

A History of Faith (and Motors)
Locals will tell you that Penzance Street wasn't just residential; it was once a spiritual hub. The user who knows the area well will remember that there used to be two churches bookending the street, standing as pillars of the community.

Most notably, on the corner of Penzance Street and Church Street, stood the imposing Primitive Methodist Chapel. Built in 1878 to serve the spiritual needs of the mining families, it was a grand stone structure that dominated the junction.

Its history took a fantastic turn in the 20th century. After closing as a place of worship in 1940, the building didn't stay empty for long. It was famously converted into Steele’s Garage, which put Moor Row on the map in the 1970s as one of the first dealerships in the UK to sell Datsun cars.
  • It’s a quirky bit of local trivia: a building designed for sermons eventually became the place to buy a Japanese hatchback!
At the other end of the stretch, near the intersection with School Street, stood the School Street Chapel (often associated with the United Methodists).

Between these two places of worship, Penzance Street was effectively the Sunday route for the entire village.

And we can’t forget the Church Hall. Often the venue for Sunday schools, tea dances, and village meetings, the hall was the social glue of the street.

While the physical landscape has changed - with many of these old ecclesiastical buildings now converted into lovely residential properties like "Church Mews" - the footprint of that history remains.

Penzance Street Today
Today, Penzance Street is a quiet, residential row, but if you look closely, the clues to its past are everywhere.

From the Cornish name on the sign to the "stone’s throw" proximity to the old church sites, it’s a street that tells the story of how a small Cumbrian village became a melting pot of workers, worshippers, and families.

Next time you’re walking past the school or turning onto Church Street, take a moment to picture the miners and the methodists who walked those cobbles before you.
